California’s state fish, the California golden trout, is imperiled by hybridization and the destruction of its high-Sierra habitat. CalTrout’s intent is to protect and restore 3 of the 4 most threatened native golden trout populations and the habitats supporting them.
We will do this by:
- Implementing the California Golden Trout Conservation Agreement
- Eliminating or developing sustainable cattle grazing practices on the Kern Plateau
- Supporting completion and implementation of genetics management plan for California golden, Little Kern golden and Kern River rainbow trout
- Increasing public awareness and participating in wild trout conservation programs relevant to the Kern Plateau
- Restoring key habitats and ecological processes supporting California golden trout and other native species in the Sierra Nevada
- Improving the scientific understanding of meadow restoration practices benefiting Sierra native trout
