TAHOE REGION PROGRAM MANAGER
RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the
Conservation Director, the Tahoe Region Program Manager will take the lead role
on California Trout’s conservation and advocacy work in the Truckee-Lake Tahoe
region while collaborating closely with California Trout’s other conservation
field staff and its San Francisco central office staff. In addition to working
with the Conservation Director to open the Tahoe Region office, the Program
Manager will be responsible for identifying, managing and organizing
conservation and restoration projects for native wild trout and for implementing
strategies to fund the organization’s conservation projects by assisting in the
development of proposals suitable for submission to foundations, corporations
and individuals. S/he will also be expected to assist in cultivating
relationships with new and existing major donors in the region. The ability to
work independently and to clearly evaluate, prioritize, execute and advance
project plans on the most critical conservation threats to wild trout and their
waters is a key to the success of the position. Other responsibilities will
include project staff supervision and relationship building with community
leaders and government officials, public agencies, donors, foundations,
corporations, the media, and other nonprofit organizations. The incumbent will
develop and manage the office’s annual budget and contribute to the external
effectiveness of California Trout and its mission.
EDUCATION, SKILL, EXPERIENCE
1. Bachelors, Masters or Doctorate degree in biology, fisheries, ecology,
hydrology, environmental science/studies or related field and three to five
years of related work experience.
2. Successful management experience required, including ability to set clear
priorities and objectives, develop and implement work plans, and mentor and
supervise staff, consultants, interns and others.
3. Excellent organizational and time management skills and the ability to work
independently with minimal direction and supervision and to consistently meet
deadlines.
4. Proven ability to develop constructive and effective working relationships
with scientists, government representatives, donors, California Trout members,
staff, volunteers and other non-profit conservation organizations.
5. Understanding and familiarity of California fisheries conservation issues,
watershed science and management, state and federal legislation and policy
formulation and analysis, and experience in applying this knowledge to advocate
for change.
6. Experience working with regional, state and federal agencies and staff on
laws and policies that affect California’s fisheries and aquatic resources (e.g.
Clean Water Act, National Environmental Policy Act, National Forest Management
Act, Endangered Species Act, California Environmental Quality Act, and
California Fish and Game code) a plus.
7. Demonstrated ability to develop funding sources from conservation programs
and to administer and effectively manage those funds.
8. Proven experience developing, directing, and managing projects, staff and
budgets.
9. Outstanding interpersonal and leadership skills required.
10. Demonstrated ability to secure funding from foundations and corporate
sources and in developing and managing donor relations.
11. Availability to travel, primarily throughout the Eastern Sierra/Truckee-Lake
Tahoe region. A valid California driver’s license and dependable vehicle
required.
12. Familiarity with the Truckee-Lake Tahoe region, its ecology, policy makers,
opinion leaders, and politics a plus.
13. Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to work with
diverse audiences, stakeholders, and the press and media; experienced public
speaking a plus.
14. Experience/familiarity in conducting field work, including biological and
ecological assessments (habitat/stream monitoring, flow measurements, etc.)
preferred.
15. Committed to integration and team work and an organizational environment
built on cross-regional/cross-departmental collaboration.
16. Embraces change, identifies new directions and opportunities for growth,
entrepreneurial spirit, and a passion for the environment.
17. Demonstrated experience in MS Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required.
Experience with Geographic Information Systems (ArcInfo/ArcView) a plus.
18. Familiarity and understanding of fishing a plus.

EASTERN SIERRA INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES
California Trout is seeking an intern
to work in the Eastern Sierra during the summer and fall of 2008. The
internship, based in the Mammoth Lakes area, will report to the Eastern Sierra
Program Manager and at times work under the guidance of US Forest Service staff.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to gain experience in
hands-on conservation relating to watershed and fisheries management. The
internship requires a high level of independence, self-motivation and ability to
work well with others. Backcountry camping will be required. The intern will be
involved with an array of projects including but not limited to:
Assisting in the coordination of volunteer events in the Golden Trout
Wilderness.
Conducting stream habitat surveys.
Assisting in monitoring riparian habitats.
Supporting gravel augmentation/spawning restoration project.
Developing education and outreach materials.
Required skills:
Minimum of Bachelors degree in fisheries biology, watershed sciences, natural
resources management or related field.
Sufficient backcountry experience.
Demonstrated ability to collect data in the field
Demonstrated experience in using MS Office Word, Excel, and Power Point, and
strong computer and internet skills.
Desired skills:
Solid writing ability to compile reports and summarize data.
Knowledge and proficiency in GIS.
Ability to work independently yet collaboratively with a team of professional
conservation staff.
First aid/Wilderness training.
Ability and desire to learn new subjects.
Expected start date is as soon as possible, ideally early July. Intern will need
to have personal transportation. Housing may or may not be provided during
non-field times. A stipend of $500 per month will be provided, as well as
re-imbursement for mileage.

DEVELOPMENT INTERN
The internship position offers education in the field of non-profit fundraising
and event coordination. Projects include event planning, researching and
tracking grant proposals and reports, donor cultivation, researching individual
donors, and working on other fundraising campaigns.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Development Intern provides a wide range of support to the Development
Director. S/He supports the position through communications and facilitating
workflow progress, provides support for the Major Donor Program and assists in
the cultivation of relationships with existing donors, prospects and board
members. S/He also assists with the creation of informational packets and
reports for major donors and the preparation of donor correspondence including
general correspondence, responses to inquiries, and cultivation and stewardship
pieces. He/She coordinates in-house mailings tailored specifically to major
donors. Other projects can include researching donors and prospects,
implementing donor recognition activities and assisting with acknowledgment
activities.
The development intern assists in the organization, coordination and
implementation of donor events.
The intern also assists with the Grant Program. Activities can include
researching potential grant maker prospects, maintaining the grant database, and
editing proposals, letters of inquiry and grant reporting materials.

CONSERVATION INTERN
Watershed and fisheries conservation-advocacy group
California Trout is seeking a graduate-level summer intern. The internship,
based at California Trout’s headquarters in San Francisco, will report to the
Conservation Director and work as part of a team on several important science
and policy issues.
RESPONSIBILITIES
These include, but are not limited to, refining an
in-depth scientific report developed in partnership with the state's foremost
watershed scientists at U.C. Davis on the health and status of California's
native salmonids (salmon, steelhead, and trout), collaborating with graduate
students at the Stanford Environmental Law Clinic on groundwater regulations and
reform, and assisting in the organization, refinement and development of
California Trout’s conservation policies. Required skills include information
research and synthesis; excellent writing, proofreading, editing;
resourcefulness, and the ability to work independently yet collaboratively with
a team of professional conservation and communications staff. Experience with
desktop publishing and/or print publications a plus.
This 10-week internship includes a $5,000 stipend and the possibility of some
telecommuting if desired.
