Ventura County is associated with three of the four Core 1 O.mykiss populations (populations of southern Steelhead that have the highest intrinsic potential to contribute to the long-term persistence of the species) within the Monte Arido Highlands Biogeographic Population Group. The Santa Clara, Ventura and Santa Ynez Rivers are all vital to the recovery of Southern steelhead, as well as sustaining local agricultural economies.
Through the leadership of the steelhead coalition and the implementation of proof-of-concept projects that advance the restoration of the Santa Clara River and its tributaries, CalTrout will establish itself as a community leader in this important region.
CalTrout will work to build a presence in the Ventura community and Southern California and be recognized as a vital partner and leader for Southern steelhead recovery on the Santa Clara River, Ventura River and surrounding freshwater ecosystems.
