SUMMARY:2025 Eel River Pikeminnow Fishing Derby
DESCRIPTION:Sacramento pikeminnow are a native fish to California but were introduced to the Eel in the 1970’s. Sacramento pikeminnow are piscivorous (eat other fish) and have been found to consume native salmonids and lamprey among other fishes in the Eel River. On top of the many stressors affecting the Eel River such as drought\, habitat availability\, and other climate change impacts pikeminnow can have a significant effect on native fish populations. Therefore\, research on Sacramento pikeminnow in the Eel River can help managers aid in the conservation of our native fishes. \nHow You Can Participate: \nTo enter into the contest you must provide a valid (google) email address and upload a photo of your fish. Thanks for participating and doing your part to protect native fishes in the Eel River. Here are the prize categories: \n\nMost pikeminnow (greater than 6 inches) removed over the duration of the contest. (1st-$250\, 2nd-$150\, 3rd-$100)\nMost pikeminnow (greater than 12 inches) removed over the duration of the contest. MUST include tape measure in photo. (1st-$500\, 2nd-$350\, 3rd-$250)\nBiggest fish (length). MUST include tape measure in photo. (1st-$250\, 2nd-$150\, 3rd-$100)\nDrawing for kids (under 18) that entered a pikeminnow in the contest. (8 winners – $50/each)\n\nLocation \n\nDerby includes all waters open to angling on the South Fork Eel River downstream of the Humboldt County line to the confluence with the mainstem. The mainstem Eel from Dos Rios to the mouth of the Van Duzen. The Van Duzen from Grizzly Creek to the mouth of the Van Duzen.\n\nContest Rules: \n\n\nFor online form\, submit entries using one email address. All entries at the end of the contest for the “most pikeminnow…” will be tallied by participant name. Online form HERE!\nFor Mail in Form- mail in forms must be postmarked on or before September 3. This year marks a major milestone for the Eel River watershed as Phase 2 of the Eel River Watershed Restoration and Conservation Program kicks off and the Potter Valley Project (including two dams) nears decommissioning. To commemorate this epic year of watershed renewal we’re excited to celebrate with the community. \nThe Expo is a free community event\, as a part of the Eel River Forum series\, that will center around family activities\, brief presentations from keynote speakers\, and informal presentations from local scientists and other watershed experts at activity booths. Although this is a free event\, we do ask that you register in advance HERE. \n \nWe invite you to join us! You will learn about Southern California’s iconic but endangered native fish\, the Southern steelhead\, their place in our local LA ecosystems\, and how climate change and urban infrastructure are impacting their historic habitat. \nWe will share exciting updates about the dam removal and habitat restoration project currently taking place on Malibu Creek to help these fish and revive an entire ecosystem — and what you can do to support the survival of these vulnerable critters! After\, we’ll work together to remove any trash found throughout the lagoon\, doing our part to support a healthy ecosystem for both our human and non-human communities. See you there! DESCRIPTION:Join our terrific partner\, the Alameda Creek Alliance (ACA)\, for a for a van-based tour of Alameda Creek fish restoration projects! \nJeff Miller\, ACA Director\, and Steven Cochrane\, volunteer coordinator\, will lead the full-day watershed tour from the flood control channel and new fish ladders in the lower creek\, to Little Yosemite in Sunol Regional Wilderness along upper Alameda Creek. CalTrout’s Claire Buhanan will also be speaking at the event.  \nJeff will have copies of his new book\, Bay Area Wildlife: An Irreverent Guide\, to be published by Heyday books next month. \nPlease plan to bring a lunch and water bottle. There will be some walking required: one mile on level pavement at the lower fish ladder; two miles round-trip on a dirt fire road to Little Yosemite.
