Los Angeles’ Coastal Cleanup Day recruits an average of 7600 volunteers annually to remove 2 million pounds of trash from inland and coastal waterways throughout LA County. We’ll be at the Malibu Creek location\, but if that’s not convenient\, there are more than 60+ cleanup sites throughout the county for you to choose from. \nJoin Malibu Creek Ecosystem Restoration Project and Four Seasons Westlake for a fall morning along scenic Malibu Creek to help keep our outdoor spaces litter free. DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Eastern Sierra \nDo you have a passion for native trout\, the eastern Sierra\, camping and working outdoors? CalTrout is looking for volunteers to assist with field-based fisheries work in the eastern Sierra on a Lahontan Cutthroat Trout recovery project. This is a super unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in fish sampling methods\, data collection\, and applied fisheries management and restoration. \nThis opportunity would be excellent for: \n\nStudents in fisheries programs who are looking to gain experience or electrofishing hours\nEarly career restoration practitioners interested in getting more hands-on experience\nAnyone who loves being outdoors and is excited about having a direct positive impact in critical habitat restoration\n\nAbout the project \nThis project involves field-based fisheries work in the eastern Sierra\, assisting CalTrout on a Lahontan Cutthroat Trout recovery project. This project involves the use of a novel dewatering technique\, properly utilizing electrofishing backpacks\, and identifying native fish from the Walker River Basin including Lahontan Cutthroat trout (LCT) and non-native trout like Brook trout. This is a non-native trout removal project\, which means that non-native fish will be culled from the system for the restoration of native trout and fish like LCT. Slinkard Creek offers up a diverse and picturesque ecosystem along the high deserts of the Eastern Sierra. \nVolunteers will be joining our hitch crews for 4 days of remote camping to conduct field work near the Walker Basin in Mono County. This opportunity requires a high level of comfort and resilience in the outdoors\, with long days spent in the field in exposed terrain and camping at night. We are looking for volunteers who can carry up to 40 lbs. while working in remote rugged terrain. Volunteers need to provide their own camping supplies and food\, although we’re happy to help procure extra gear that you might need.  \nWe believe that community stewardship supports well-tended landscapes\, and we’re excited to include our community in these meaningful opportunities! DESCRIPTION:Sacramento pikeminnow are a native fish to California but were introduced to the Eel River watershed in the 1970s and can have a significant impact on native fish populations. Therefore\, suppression of Sacramento pikeminnow in the Eel River is a tool managers can use to aid in the conservation of our native fishes. CalTrout\, TRIB Research\, Wiyot Tribe\, Bureau of Land Management\, and Stillwater Sciences are hosting an Eel River Pikeminnow Fishing Derby to aid in pikeminnow suppression efforts. This derby gives cash prize awards up to $400 to anglers who want to enjoy sport fishing for Eel River pikeminnow while simultaneously helping our native fish populations. \nHow You Can Participate: \nTo enter into the contest you must provide a valid (Google) email address and upload a photo of your fish. Thanks for participating and doing your part to protect native fishes in the Eel River. Winners will receive exciting prizes! Here are the prize categories: \n\nMost pikeminnow (greater than 6 inches) removed over the duration of the contest. Prizes: $150\, $100\, and $50.\nMost pikeminnow (greater than 12 inches) removed over the duration of the contest. MUST include tape measure in photo. Prizes: $400\, $200\, and $100.\nBiggest fish (length). MUST include tape measure in photo. Prizes: $350\, $150\, and $100.\nDrawing for anyone that entered a pikeminnow in the contest. Prizes: 8 winners at $50 each.\n\nContest Rules: \n\n\nSubmit entries using one email address. All entries at the end of the contest for the “most pikeminnow…” will be tallied by participant name.\nIndividual contestants can win no more than one prize category\nCheating or falsification of entries will result in automatic disqualification\nContestants must follow all CDFW fishing regulations\, including no bait\, barbless artificial lures only. Single barbless hooks are recommended for all manners of effort including\, fly\, and artificial lures.\nThis derby includes all waters open to angling on the South Fork Eel River downstream of Humboldt County line to the confluence with the mainstem and the mainstem Eel from the confluence with the South Fork Eel to the mouth of the Van Duzen.\n\n\nFishing Regulations & Rules: \n\n\nEel River regulations currently state there is no bag limit on pikeminnow. Retention of salmonids is strictly prohibited.\nStrict compliance with Fish and Game Code Section 1.87: WASTE OF FISH; it is unlawful to cause or permit any deterioration or waste of any fish taken in the waters of this state.\nSuggestions for fish use: consumption\, gardening fertilizer\, crab bait\, or research.
