Tom April
Tom has been guiding out of Clearwater Lodge for over 25 years. His passion for fly fishing is evident whether he is instructing at one of our schools or out on the water on a private guide trip. Tom is a gifted teacher, with patience and knowledge that allow his clients to quickly reach their maximum potential. He is quick to laugh and an exceptional guide to spend the day with. Based in Grants Pass, Oregon, in the winter months you’ll find Tom guiding for steelhead on the Rouge, Klamath and Applegate Rivers.

Jason Cockrum
Jason graduated from the Clearwater Guide School in 1999. Jay brings a gentle, quiet competence and great angling skill to his guiding adventures. He can put you on trout wherever you choose to fish on our area waters. He lives in Truckee and when not guiding for Clearwater, he guides for steelhead on the Trinity River, and trout on the Truckee River and the stillwaters around Lake Tahoe.

Matt Dahl
Matt Grew up in the Redding area of Northern California where he honed his fishing skills on the many local creeks and rivers. After serving in combat in the US Marine Corps, Matt returned to Redding and the waters that he loves. A 2015 graduate of the Clearwater Guide School, Matt’s passion for fly fishing coupled with his easy going demeanor guarantees guests a fantastic experience on the water. In the winter, Matt chases steelhead on the Trinity River and trout on the Lower Sacramento River. He is also an active volunteer with the local chapter of Project Healing Waters, an organization dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of military service personnel through fly fishing and related activities. This involvement is a perfect fit that allows Matt to teach his love of fly fishing to his fellow veterans.

John Fochetti
John has been fly fishing for over fifteen years, and worked in the industry for the past ten. He graduated from the 2009 Clearwater Guide School, and stayed on to become another great addition to our amazing guide staff. Before coming to the lodge John taught fly fishing schools at the Orvis store in Reno where he was also the fishing manager. His calm and patient style of teaching and guiding will make your day on the water a truly enjoyable experience.

David Neal
David Neal attended the Clearwater Guide School in 2002 and went on to develop a successful spring and summer guide service business in Mammoth Lakes along with guiding steelhead anglers on the Trinity River in the winter. He is the epitome of a professional guide – acutely fishy, exceptionally patient, and always encouraging. Dave enjoys teaching new skills and focuses on always having a fun day on the water. Dave recently relocated with his wife and daughter to Redding to be closer to the amazing northern CA rivers he loves so much. We are happy to have him join our team this year at Clearwater Lodge!

Mike Peters
Mike also started guiding out of Clearwater over 25 years ago. He took a detour with Tom April to set up their own guide service around Mammoth Lakes, but eventually returned to the lure of the Fall River valley and its abundant fisheries. His upbeat personality and enthusiastic teaching skills make Mike a favorite amongst Clearwater guests. A resident of Grants Pass, Oregon, Mike can be found mastering the Umpqua and Trinity rivers during steelhead season.

Brooks “Enrique” Provence
Brooks grew up in Redding and has been fishing local creeks and rivers for wild trout for the past 4 years. A 2015 graduate of the Clearwater Guide class of Young Guns, he loves swinging for steelhead as well as fishing local rivers, creeks and lakes. Brooks uses wonderful creativity to teach his clients techniques for catching trout in all situations. He also is a prolific fly tyer and prefers to have guests use his own flies and patterns when fishing with him. Brooks’ easy going style and quick smile make him a favorite of Clearwater guests. (Fun Fact: A Clearwater guest gave Brooks his nickname. When you meet him, you’ll get it!)

Brian Theriot
Brian “Bucko” Theriot has been plying the waters of northern California since he was a young boy. After spending many summers with his family on the upper Sacramento River, he developed a passion for fly fishing. This passion eventually led him to leave behind the beaches of Southern California and relocate to the beautiful town of Mount Shasta. Brian’s easy going personality and patient demeanor make him a great guide choice for the beginner as well as the seasoned angler looking to learn new techniques on both moving and still waters. A 2014 graduate of the Clearwater Guide school, Brian’s enthusiasm for flyfishing ensures that guests have an enjoyable and rewarding experience with him.
