Joseph W. Chait was a native San Franciscan and supporter of California Trout and environmental causes. An avid fly fisherman and outdoor enthusiast, Joey had a smile and laugh that could fill a room. He was passionate about his family, his work, his community and conservation. As a devoted father and grandfather, Joey cared deeply about children and their future. He was a man who put family and true friendship above all else.
In the spirit of Joey’s desire to inspire others, a group of his fishing buddies partnered with California Trout to establish this Fund in his memory.
Purpose of the Joey Chait Youth Initiative Fund:
To make children more aware of the importance of protecting California’s fish and rivers, and to promote the sport of fly fishing in the next generation.
The Fund will:
- Support California Trout’s work to ensure resilient wild fish in healthy waters.
- Establish a partnership between California Trout and the California Academy of Sciences to:
a) Teach school age children the importance of healthy rivers, streams, and wild fish populations in California.
b) Teach kids about fish, insects, animals and plants in our rivers, streams and lakes, as well as the importance of conservation. - Expose kids to fly fishing, casting and tying.
- Partner with Lost Coast Outfitters and the Golden Gate Casting Ponds to teach kids fly fishing and casting skills.
As the Fund grows, potential expansion could include:
- Partner with the Academy of Sciences to establish a trout and steelhead exhibit at the Academy to raise awareness of California rivers and its amazing trout, steelhead and salmon diversity.
- Work with area schools and non‐profits to develop programs about fish and fly fishing and organize watershed visits.
- Arrange a Kid’s Fishing Day at a local stream or lake.
