On February 24, 2022, Assemblymember Jim Wood introduced a new bill (AB 2451) to improve drought preparedness for California. CalTrout is proud to sponsor the bill along with our partners in the Salmon and Steelhead Coalition, including Trout Unlimited California and The Nature Conservancy in California.
The bill will create a dedicated Drought Section within the Division of Water Rights responsible for improving drought planning, drought response and climate resiliency statewide, and directing the agency to conduct drought planning for North Coast watersheds. Also required under the bill, appropriately resourced staff would develop drought plans in advance of a drought or drought like conditions occurring. During times of drought, the bill would require the State Water Resources Control Board and the Department of Fish and Wildlife to take on principles and guidelines for diversion and use of water in coastal watersheds, no later than March 31, 2023.
“Having consistent and predictable drought response helps both fish and people,” said Redgie Collins, Legal and Policy Director for California Trout. “Our salmon and steelhead are in decline and common sense actions, such as [the bill] AB 2451, will ensure that they have a future here in California.”
