Position Summary
California Trout is seeking to fill a steelhead restoration Project Coordinator position in the Ventura County area. The Project Coordinator will have an office in Ventura, California. The existing Santa Clara River Steelhead Coalition was founded to further steelhead recovery by providing a forum for conservation groups working on steelhead recovery in the region to coordinate, partner, strategically plan for and implement steelhead restoration activities, as well as take actions to engage the community to better understand and support these steelhead restoration activities. The role of the Project Coordinator will be to support this ongoing effort as well as other regional Southern California projects. Working under the direction of the Conservation Program Manager, the Project Coordinator will assist with Coalition operations and build Coalition capacity to achieve the deliverables outlined below:
Capacity Building:
- Identify, coordinate and formalize Coalition partnerships with NGOs and other stakeholders focused on steelhead recovery.
- Assist in the drafting of Coalition protocols and policies.
- Manage Coalition meetings and communications.
- Capacity building will be ongoing: recruiting and engaging new partners; updating opportunities; completing grant applications and complying with reporting requirements.
Project Prioritization, Funding, & Implementation Plan:
- Work with Coalition members to develop and/or update a consensus plan for the prioritization of steelhead restoration projects.
- Assist in the development (grant writing) of a minimum of 3 discrete, implementation and/or planning steelhead restoration projects each year (e.g., fish passage, invasive vegetation removal, etc.)
- Assist with the implementation and Project Management of construction and implementation projects.
Communications Plan (Internal & External):
- Facilitate internal communications among Coalition members and external communications with agencies, stakeholders and the public at large to facilitate steelhead restoration.
- Assist in the update of a steelhead restoration website including information about steelhead, resource information pages and links, member information and links, newsletters, and a project update blog.
- Maintain a database focused on steelhead restoration to catalogue: Coalition members; watershed stakeholders, landowners, resource managers, jurisdictions, and agencies; public officials; watershed data and maps; existing watershed, habitat, species, and lands management plans and reports; project opportunities; completed project reference library; names of licensed professionals, contractors, and suppliers; potential private, corporate, and government funding sources and schedules.
Outreach, Education, and Community Engagement Plan:
- Manage the schedule of public meetings and events developed in the communications plan for community engagement, and public outreach and education regarding steelhead restoration.
- Research and identify target landowners; city, county, and watershed representatives; NGO’s; agency/jurisdictional representatives.
- Develop education and outreach materials.
Minumum Qualifications
- BA/BS degree in biology, fisheries, hydrology, natural resource science or related planning or natural resources field.
- 2-5 years’ experience managing various aspects of restoration projects, including grant management, contract and budget management, subcontractor management, timelines and deliverables.
- Experience in leading field crews, planning and coordinating scientific data collection and analysis, and report writing.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Detail-oriented organization and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently on day-to-day activities to carry out project tasks.
- Ability to coordinate and participate in focused meetings with a breadth of stakeholders, landowners, agency staff and managers, engineers, and university scientists.
- Proficient with Mac and PC computers, MS Office software (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and Adobe products; familiarity with ArcGIS; experience with dataloggers and data management (e.g., temperature and streamflow data).
- Knowledge of natural resource and regulatory agencies policies and mandates, public funding programs and proposal writing.
