On Saturday, May 18 2019, CalTrout led a Fly-fishing 101 workshop at Lake Piru in the Santa Clara watershed for Boy Scout Troop 411 from La Verne, California.

The class was led by Russell Marlow, Project Manager for CalTrout’s Ventura office, and Sandra Jacobson, South Coast Regional Director based in CalTrout’s San Diego office. About 17 scouts learned the basics of fly rods, reels, lines and leaders; and how to fly-cast. They also learned fundamentals of insects and stream ecology, and how to use imitation fly patterns to catch trout.

There was a fly-fishing competition won by Gary Watson, who won a hat from Patagonia. Thanks to LL Bean and Golden State Flycasters for fly-rod combos.

The Boy Scouts were camping over the weekend at Lake Piru, and had great weather to get out and try their new casting skills.

We hope all the Scouts had a great time learning how to cast and about stream ecology. Thank you to our South Coast staff and our sponsors for putting on a great event.
