High in the Sierra headwaters of Mono County, By-Day Creek flows through a California Department of Fish and Wildlife ecological reserve that shelters one of the few remaining genetically pure populations of Lahontan cutthroat trout in California — a species that has already vanished from roughly 95% of its historic range. The creek's importance extends beyond its own banks: it serves as the source population for Lahontan cutthroat trout downstream in Silver Creek, making its protection a linchpin for recovery efforts across the wider watershed. But decades of fire suppression have left the surrounding forest choked with an overly dense understory of white fir, creating exactly the kind of fuel load that turns a routine wildfire into a watershed-altering catastrophe. A severe burn here wouldn't just threaten trees; it could send ash, sediment, and debris into the creek and wipe out a fish population that took generations to rebuild.

CalTrout partnered with CDFW and contractor California Reforestation to get ahead of that risk, thinning the dense understory along a key corridor that buffers both the creek and the fire road used for suppression access. The work clears out excess conifers to reduce fuel loads while opening space for native aspen to regenerate, improving biodiversity along with fire resilience. Crews began cutting in September 2023, and the project pushed through one of the snowiest winters in Sierra history — enduring months of delay and extensive road repairs — before finishing in fall 2024. The approach has drawn interest well beyond By-Day Creek itself: the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest has expressed interest in replicating it across the broader watershed, and it fits within CalTrout's larger strategy connecting forest thinning to healthier meadows and, ultimately, healthier trout streams.
