In California, the last Saturday in April marks the traditional opening of trout season fishing (aka “Fishmas”).
Before you hit the water, be mindful of the new CDFW trout fishing regulations as they have recently changed in 2021. Some places like the Eastern Sierras still have the traditional trout opener such as Crowley Lake, Convict Lake, and Bridgeport Reservoir.
Other places, especially rivers and streams such as the East Walker River, have changed both when and how you are allowed to fish. So if you are considering a trip to the Eastern Sierra to observe Fishmas this season, remember to check the new regulations.
We are still actively engaging with the California Department of Fish and wildlife to discuss popular waters that we feel were not adequately protected with new regulations, especially the Fall River and East Walker River.
