Watershed and fisheries conservation-advocacy group California Trout is seeking up to two interns to work in the Eastern Sierra/South Sierra during the summer and fall of 2011.
The internship, based in the Mammoth Lake/Bishops area, will report to the Eastern Sierra Program Manager and at times work under the guidance of US Forest Service and/or CA Dept. of Fish & Game staff.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to gain experience in hands-on conservation relating to watershed and fisheries management. The internship requires a high level of independence, self-motivation and ability to work well with others. Backcountry camping will be required. The intern will be involved with an array of projects including but not limited to:
- Assisting in the coordination of volunteer events in the Golden Trout Wilderness.
- Conducting stream habitat surveys.
- Assisting in monitoring riparian habitats.
- Assist in various restoration projects.
- Developing education and outreach materials.
Required skills:
- Minimum undergraduate status in fisheries biology, biology, ecology, watershed sciences, natural resources management or related field.
- Sufficient backcountry experience.
- Demonstrated ability to collect data in the field.
- Demonstrated experience in using MS Office Word, Excel, and Power Point, and strong computer and internet skills.
Desired skills: - Solid writing ability to compile reports and summarize data.
- Knowledge of GIS.
- Ability to work independently yet collaboratively with a team of professional conservation staff.
- First aid/Wilderness training.
- Ability and desire to learn new subjects.
Expected start date is as soon as possible, ideally early June. The intern will need to have personal transportation. Housing may or may not be provided during non-field times. A stipend of $750 per month will be provided, as well as re-imbursement for mileage. Additionally, academic credit may be possible.
