This year marks a major milestone for the Eel River watershed, as Phase 2 of the Eel River Restoration and Conservation Program kicks off and the Potter Valley Project (including two dams) nears decommissioning. To commemorate this epic year of watershed renewal, we are excited to present the Eel River Photo Contest in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Eureka!
CalTrout and the Rotary Club invite you to submit your best photos taken in the Eel River watershed to be displayed during the upcoming Eel River Expo, on April 19, 2025 at the Fortuna River Lodge in Fortuna, CA!
We invite you to submit one photo per category (maximum of four photos) via the buttons above, with one winner selected for each category. You cannot win multiple categories, however, anyone (even winners for the other categories) is eligible to win the Grand Prize selected by public vote at the Eel River Expo.

Contest Schedule
- January 15: Contest and photo submission period begins.
- March 31: Photo submission period ends.
- April 10: Best Photo winners announced for each category and prizes sent by mail shortly thereafter. 20 finalists for the Grand Prize announced to be voted on in-person at the Eel River Expo on April 19.
- April 19: Winning photos displayed at the Eel River Expo, and 20 finalists displayed for public vote to determine Grand Prize winner.
- By April 30: Grand Prize Award winner announced via email and social media and prize mailed out shortly thereafter.
Contest Rules and Guidelines:
Once the submission period ends (January 15 - March 31), a CalTrout and Rotary Club of Eureka judge panel will select the Best Photo winners for the four categories in addition to the Emerging Photographer Award winner. To enter the Emerging Photographer category, you must be and indicate in your submission that you are between the ages of 18 and 25.
The judge panel will also select five finalists for each category (Recreation, Access, Wildlife, Restoration). From those 20 total finalists, the public will have the opportunity to vote in-person at the Eel River Expo in Fortuna on April 19th to determine the Grand Prize Award winner. Participants must read the following rules, terms and legal conditions before submitting any photos. Click here to read the legal conditions.
Judging Criteria: Photos will be judged on how well they depict the spirit and diversity of the Eel River watershed, especially for the categories of: 1. restoration, 2. access, 3. recreation, 4. wildlife. We especially support photo submissions that display the Eel River’s natural scenic beauty, as well as overall artistic merit (lighting, color, composition, etc).
- All photos must in some way be related to the Eel River watershed, especially it’s rivers, creeks, streams, and/or lakes and/or the activities around them. Ideally, photos should be in a horizontal format.
- Maximum number of entries: 4 per individual (1 per category).
- All submissions must be submitted using the contest online entry forms.
- Photographs must be in digital format.
- Only online entries will be eligible. No print or film submissions will be accepted.
- The photograph need not be taken with a digital camera; scans of negatives, transparencies, or photographic prints are acceptable.
- Digital files must be high resolution, 300 ppi, max file size is 15MB and must be in .jpg format.
- All entries must be received by 11:59 pm PDT, March 31, 2025
- If a person is in the photo, you must submit a signed model release for each person depicted in the image. Please download the release document, enter your information and signature, and then upload to our online submission form along with your photo(s).
- To be eligible for the Emerging Photographer Award category, you must be between the ages of 18 and 25 and indicate such in your submission(s).
