After four hot, dry years, Central Valley salmon populations on the ropes. Winter run Chinook salmon, the most endangered of the Central Valley’s four runs of Chinook Salmon have been hit especially hard by the drought conditions. Almost the entire 2014 year class of eggs was lost because of high temperatures in the Sacramento River below lake Shasta. Compounding the loss, large numbers of adult winter run salmon continue to stray into dead-end agricultural canals in the Valley where they die before before they can spawn.
This problem has existed for decades but now CalTrout is partnering with Sacramento Valley farm and water groups to get solutions built now and buoy these populations through these difficult drought years.
