I think it is great that Humboldt is celebrating their heritage with this event. It is also a great opportunity to educate the public to the things that are destroying this heritage: uncontrolled & polluted runoff (from ‘farms’), and allowing bait draggers to fish on the Eel (or the Smith).
Both of the above amount to suffocation of future generations in egg form, and slaughter of the ones that do return. The Mad is already a put and take fishery; bait dragging should be allowed there. However, the dwindling Wild fish deserve better protection than they are currently getting… Having a ‘contest’ on the Eel is simply going to encourage more harmful behavior. One need simply float a river during Feb or March and see all the dead steelhead, including a lot of juveniles that did not die from the rigors of spawning… Bait (which is usually swallowed causing deadly damage) does not equal ‘catch and release’ like artificials (which usually hook in the mouth only). I don’t see any information being released about these important issues. You?
