California Trout is leading the effort to list Southern California steelhead as endangered under the California Endangered Species Act. On October 25, 2023, we successfully defended this listing in California Superior Court in Los Angeles.

In the Walker Basin, part of the Lahontan cutthroat trout's native range, CalTrout is partnering on restoration projects to eliminate non-native trout populations from the system and help maintain native populations.

Patagonia’s Holdfast Collective Awards $1 Million for CalTrout Dam Removal Efforts

In September 2023, Patagonia’s Holdfast Collective awarded California Trout $1 million over three years to support work to remove dams on the Eel River, Battle Creek, and San Francisquito Creek. This includes PG&E’s Potter Valley Project dams, PG&E’s Battle Creek Hydroelectric Project dams, and Searsville Dam on Stanford University campus.

CalTrout and Partners Applaud Governor Newsom for Signing AB 809 Into Law

Long-term fish monitoring programs in California have often struggled to receive adequate attention and funding. However, we are thrilled to share that CalTrout co-sponsored bill AB 809 was recently signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom which will establish a dedicated program to support the long-term monitoring of California’s native salmon and steelhead trout populations.

Sonar Technology Provides More Accurate Counts of Eel River Salmonids

The numbers are in on salmonids for the 2022-2023 season in the South Fork Eel River! This river is a salmon and steelhead stronghold and represents one of the best opportunities to restore wild fish abundance. To inform our conservation work, CalTrout and our partners use sonar technology to more accurately estimate how many fish are in the system.

New Project on Alameda Creek will Expand Access for Salmonids

Last year, for the first time in over fifty years, Chinook salmon and steelhead were able to access the upper Alameda Creek watershed. Soon, these fish will be able to consistently swim even further upstream. CalTrout recently was invited to lead a barrier removal project in Sunol Valley to open more than 20 miles of stream to fish.
